On Change and the Need for Unity
At the core of Ang Bagong Pinoy's principles is the desire to build a better Philippines, one Filipino at a time. It is about changing ourselves and helping one another change ourselves. We acknowledge that we need to change, each and everyone of us, no exemptions, no exclusions. It also means that people who join the movement realize the need to change and would want to help and be helped in the process.
But it doesn't mean that the movement is a magic chamber that transforms people automatically just by clicking on the "join" button. Change is a long and maybe sometimes even painful process. If at one point we feel that a member of the movement is exhibiting traits of what we feel are "lumang Pinoy" then we shouldn't feel angry or frustrated because we never know when we would be exhibiting such traits ourselves. We should simply just keep on reminding one another gently and with brotherly/sisterly compassion on what we all would want to be, a true Bagong Pinoy.
Which brings us to an important factor to consider. One big obstacle that Ang Bagong Pinoy should be able to hurdle is the fight against that sense of factionalism that has pervaded most of our country's history and culture. A "kanya-kanya" mentality where people of like minds band together and when some other people tend to show opposition to a central idea that they represent, they shoo them away.
'Dito kami, diyan kayo, wala tayong pakialaman.'
True, our discussions may stir up emotions but we should learn to rise above our emotions and find a common ground by which we can all work together.
True, emotions may sometimes run high in the exchange of opinions but that's a reflection of the frustration that we are currently feeling as a people.
True, there will be diversity in opinions and political beliefs expressed in the movement and it can become a good barometer for gauging how divisive we still are but the divisiveness was already a given in the first place. We are a deeply divided nation. When this movement was conceptualized, that was already a basic assumption. But this movement was not created simply to find like-minded people to work with. We already have so many of those, in fact too many like-minded people but in so many different groups, each one pulling the country into so many divergent directions.
We believe that the reason people will join the movement is because they believe in its basic vision of building a better Philippines one Filipino at a time. And we are all here because we love our country. We may have different ways of expressing that love, we may have varying opinions on what to do to improve our country, but it is this common love for our country that will bring us together and see us through.
It will take time because we have a lot to unlearn, we have a lot of attitudes to change, we have a lot of maturing to do but we believe that if we can only learn to respect one another and see that beyond all the rantings, beyond all the gripes, beyond all the poignant rhetorics, is a genuine Filipino patriot with a deep desire to bring this country to a height of greatness that it so deserves.
And we believe it will happen for we still have high hopes for our nation.
Mabuhay and may God bless us all in our desire to build a better Philippines !!
